We are absolutely thrilled to announce that Mawgan Porth Surf Life Saving Club has been selected as one of the fortunate recipients of a surf rescue training manikin!
We applied to Ruth Lee’s Volunteer Heroes programme, which focuses on assisting volunteer-led rescue teams that play a vital role in their communities. And we have just found out that we are one of the lucky winners!
A Game-Changer for Our Training
As a volunteer-led surf lifesaving team serving the Mawgan Porth community, this professional-grade training manikin will revolutionise how we prepare our lifeguards and lifesavers, particularly our younger members who are developing their rescue skills.
Until now, our training scenarios have been limited by the lack of realistic rescue dummies. The Ruth Lee mannequin changes everything – it will allow us to create far more realistic training scenarios in the surf, on the beach, and during first aid practice. It accurately replicates the weight and handling challenges of real-world rescues so will be an invaluable resource for the club.

Building Safer Communities
For a club like ours that operates entirely on volunteer power and limited funding, this donation makes a significant difference. Every pound we don’t have to spend on essential training equipment is a pound we can direct toward other vital areas such as junior development and additional safety equipment.
The timing couldn’t be better as we prepare for the upcoming summer season when thousands of visitors will flock to our beautiful but sometimes dangerous beach. This manikin will help ensure our team is better prepared than ever to keep everyone safe.
A huge thanks to our Fundraising Officer, Tim Walker, who submitted the application. He says,
“We were over the moon when we received the news! This manikin will truly transform our rescue training capabilities. The ability to practice realistic scenarios in challenging conditions is invaluable. We can’t thank Ruth Lee enough for including us in their Volunteer Heroes programme.”
Part of Something Bigger
We’re humbled to be among the 44 UK-based volunteer rescue teams supported by Ruth Lee this year. Their Volunteer Heroes initiative recognises the critical work performed by volunteer rescue services across the country, from mountain rescue to lifeboat crews and search and rescue units.
As Sarah Hampson, Global Marketing Manager at Ruth Lee, so perfectly stated:
“Our Volunteer Heroes programme is all about recognising and supporting the invaluable work of volunteer rescue teams. This programme focuses on assisting volunteer-led rescue teams, which play a vital role in their communities but often struggle with limited funding. “
We at Mawgan Porth Surf Life Saving Club certainly feel recognised and supported, and we’re committed to putting this generous donation to excellent use, training harder and more effectively to protect our community and visitors.
From everyone at Mawgan Porth Surf Life Saving Club – thank you, Ruth Lee. Your support will help us save lives!
