The dangers of Mawgan Porth

Although Mawgan Porth beach offers a fantastic coastal experience with its natural beauty and range of activities available, as with any beach it also comes with it’s dangers. It is the mission of Mawgan Porth SLSC to spread awareness of these dangers, and educate visitors on methods to improve their water safety.

Waves

Mawgan Porth is fortunate to be serviced by the Atlantic swell, which creates a full range of wave formations. This is influenced by the wind direction, and if you are not proficient in the ocean you should always seek advice from a member of the SLS club.

Current

Mawgan Porth has sporadic currents that run from the right and left hand side of the beach. You should never swim by the river on the left hand side as you look out to sea, and we always strongly advise to only enter the water when lifeguarded.

Tide

Like all the Cornish coast, Mawgan Porth has both neap and spring tides which benefit significant changes in height of the foreshore. A high tide at Mawgan Porth around the 6 o'clock time will invariably mean a spring tide, which offers little beach.

Sealife

Cornwall is blessed with a variety of sea life. Dolphins and seals have often been spotted.

How to find Mawgan Porth Beach

Mawgan Porth Beach is located mid-way between Newquay and Padstow on the North Cornish coast line.
