We have some brilliant news to share. Mawgan Porth Surf Life Saving Club has been awarded a grant to buy a fleet of new surf rescue boards, and it will make a real difference in how we keep our beach safe.

The grant of £5,332, alongside £2,668 that the club is putting in itself, means we can invest in proper, purpose-built rescue boards rather than making do with ageing kit. That is a total of £8,000 going straight into equipment that helps us protect people in the water.
For a volunteer-led charity like ours, funding like this is everything. It lets us focus on what we do best, which is training our members and keeping beachgoers safe, instead of worrying about whether our gear is up to the job. So from all of us at the club, thank you.
Why new rescue boards matter
Rescue boards are one of the most important tools we have. They let a trained volunteer reach someone in trouble quickly, keep them afloat, and bring them back to shore. On a beach like ours, that speed can be the difference between a close call and a tragedy.
Mawgan Porth is a high-risk beach
Our stretch of coast is beautiful, but it can be unforgiving. Strong currents, changing tides and rip currents catch people out every year, including strong swimmers and experienced surfers. Reliable rescue equipment means our volunteers can respond with confidence when it counts.
Cover when the lifeguards are off duty
RNLI lifeguards do a fantastic job through the season, but they cannot be on the beach every hour of every day. Many incidents occur in the evening or outside the main summer months, when there is no lifeguard cover at all.
That is where our trained volunteers come in. These new boards mean we are better equipped to respond during those gaps, strengthening rescue cover for the whole community.
What it means for our training
The boards will be used week in, week out for regular training, from our Nippers and juniors right through to our adult members.
The more our volunteers train with proper equipment, the sharper their skills stay. Good kit builds confidence, and confident, well-drilled rescuers save lives. This grant helps us keep raising the standard of lifesaving at Mawgan Porth for years to come.
What it means for the wider community
Everything we do comes back to one thing: a safer beach for everyone who uses it. Locals, holidaymakers, families, surfers and swimmers all benefit when trained people (and the right equipment) are ready to help.
Better rescue capacity also means better preparedness. When we can support the emergency services and respond quickly outside lifeguard hours, the whole community is safer for it. That is exactly the kind of local, grassroots impact the Denzell Downs Community Fund exists to support, and we are proud to put it to good use.
